What is IELTS?
IELTS, the International English Language Testing System, is designed to assess the language ability of candidates who need to study or work where English is used as the language of communication. IELTS is required for entry to universities in the UK and other countries. It is also increasingly being accepted by businesses as evidence of linguistic ability.
IELTS offers two test formats: Academic and General Training. Candidates can choose which format they wish to take, depending on their goals. The Academic module assesses whether a candidate is ready to begin studying or training in an English-speaking environment. The General Training module assesses whether a candidate has the basic English skills necessary for everyday life in an English-speaking country.
IELTS tests are comprised of four sections: Reading, Writing, Listening and Speaking. Each section is worth 25% of the total score. Candidates must receive a minimum score of 6.5 in each section in order to pass the test.
The Reading section consists of three passages with associated questions. Candidates have 60 minutes to complete this section.
The Writing section also consists of three tasks. Candidates have 60 minutes to complete this section. Task 1 requires candidates to describe data or a process; Task 2 requires candidates to write an essay; and Task 3 requires candidates to write a response to text(s).
The Listening section contains four recorded monologues and conversations with associated questions. Candidates have 30

The IELTS test has four modules – Listening, Reading, Writing and Speaking. All candidates take the same Listening and Speaking tests but they do different Reading and Writing tests depending on whether they are taking the Academic or General Training module.
The Academic Module is intended for those who want to study or train at undergraduate or postgraduate levels and is used by institutions such as universities and training colleges. The General Training Module is usually required for work purposes and focuses on more everyday language skills.
IELTS results are reported on a nine-band scale: Band 1 (non-user) to Band 9 (expert user). Candidates receive separate scores for each of the four components: Listening, Reading, Writing, and Speaking plus an Overall Band Score on a scale from 1–9.
